Rental Vehicles: Cars, 4X4s, Mini-Vans
GaiaLink Tours can help provide a rental vehicle for your self-guided trips. Driving on your own in Costa Rica can be a challenge and an adventure to first time visitors. This is not recommended for everybody, only for the real seasoned travelers who are used to driving in unfamiliar regions and are willing to undertake the challenge. Clients have to decide carefully the net overall pros and cons of renting versus a private transfer. Majority of the rentals in Costa Rica are manual transmission. If you cannot drive a stick, you must request the automatic transmission right away because they are on a first come first served basis and it will cost more.
Very important driving tips: Before leaving the rental office, familiarize yourself with you car's safety equipment, such as headlight a hazard lights, doors locks, and spare tire. Do not forget to get a good map if you don't have one already. Always remember to fasten seat belts. Until travelers get used to the roads and local driving habits, it is best to avoid driving at night, especially outside the city, never leave anything of value in a parked car (even if it's in the trunk and the car is locked), and always drive defensively. Hazards include pedestrians, animals on the road, huge potholes, pavement that suddenly ends, unlit vehicles, sudden fog in mountain areas, torrential rains, and reckless drivers. Given all these factors, the driver will definitely have to be prepared. Maps will be critical and traveling during the day only is recommended. Due to the complexity of the car insurance laws and driving conditions in Costa Rica , we recommend purchasing collision coverage policy when renting the vehicle.
